Gold American Buffalo Proof Coin
Modern coins are designated as proof versions based on a specific manufacturing process that utilizes a specially treated die to strike the coin. This special die, combined with multiple strikes of the blank (2 or more), creates a mirror-like shine to the field area of the coin (the portion behind the raised main design elements). Proof versions of select coins, like the Gold Buffalo Coin, are produced by the United States Mint in order to offer higher-end collector’s editions of popular releases.
One of the most beloved designs ever released by the United States Mint is the American Buffalo designed by James Earle Fraser (a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens). The Gold Buffalo coin’s design is based on the original Buffalo Nickel, with the obverse (front side) featuring the likeness of a Native American, believed to be based on one of three possible American Indians. The reverse (back side) depicts an American Bison, often referred to as a buffalo, hence the coin’s common name.
